I have a lot of respect for this release. I don't want people to take this the wrong way, but I'm really surprised they didn't release this on one LP to keep down entrance cost. Of course it shouldn't shock anyone that flippers are out enmasse. Anyways, I'll prob' buy it at some point down the line, but I really was let down when I saw the price b/c I thought maybe $40-50 (and one LP).

The original golden records were mastered at 16 ⅔ RPM. That's how they managed to fit all of it onto one record. See here: https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Sounds-Of-Earth/release/1852452This release was pressed onto 3 LPs at 33 1/3 RPM so you can actually play it on your turntable. Otherwise, you'd just be left with a pretty golden mat for your coffee table.I'm not saying this release isn't overpriced for what you actually get in the box. That depends on what you value. However, I think the choice to release it on 3 LPs was more for technical rather than commercial reasons.

got mine today, no number on the box...is this a reissue?Other than that amazing amazing amazing packaging.

thm912 Also, the "new" release is 140g. I guess, the first press was only for people who ordered via kickstarter. The second run now is 140g, not numbered/limited. thank you!

Is the one they've sent out in early December the second press?
Ginaun Ginaun
Yes, the original numbered edition listed here were sent out well before that.
Skrimpak Skrimpak
It's really depressing seeing how much scalpers are flipping these sets for on here and seeing people willing to pay despite there being a nearly identical reissue.
Angana Angana
I just hate scalpers is all, but I knew it was an inevitable consequence of an item like this.

Preorders for a new 3xLP box set will start mid-January 2018, with shipping happening sometime in February. Please do not pay these vultures here.https://lightintheattic.net/releases/3747-the-voyager-golden-record

Hate all the people selling this sealed for way over the price it cost. Screw you for buying it just to make a profit!!!
Arakus Arakus
Keep note of every seller doing so, it's becoming a handy list of people never to do business with,
Diab Diab
Haven't really gone through mine, but is there a pin in all the Kickstarter packages?
Malogamand Malogamand
there should be a pin, but its not in the box, its in one of the cardboard tubes that was in the packaging
Gavirgas Gavirgas
The pin was in the packaging inside the shipping box but not inside the boxset. I fear some people did not realize the pin was mixed in with outer packaging and perhaps discarded it with the rest of the trash :(
Bliss Bliss
TeaTimeFrank There should have been a pin within the actual shipping box when you received the set. There were some people who reported not getting the pin though.

I was about the 50th backer, yet my box was Nr. 11965, so at least 12,000 were made. small gripe, but overall, a magnificent piece.
Nagis Nagis
The said it was logistically impossible to ship them in the order of the kickstarter pledges. I hear you, though.
Mr Freeman Mr Freeman
Does anyone know how many were pressed? Received ours yesterday!
Onoxyleili Onoxyleili
augustmay Does anyone know how many were pressed? Received ours yesterday! Around 10,000. At least that was the amount of Kickstarter backers.

Received mine today. No. 03624. Beautiful packaging and fantastic presentation. The golden record looks and sounds sublime.

Fantastic release. A great artistic and scientific achievement. Ozma Records/Timothy Ferris did a great job with the remaster, plus the updated artist information on some tracks corrects a four-decade injustice. A record for everyone.

I got 04090, came just today. Really dig the box, and the common problem with the missing pin struck me too. Can't wait to listen.
Elildelm Elildelm
The kickstarter told everyone to check the "tube" surrounding the main box for it, hope you didn't throw the mailer away without doing so.
Wild Python Wild Python
My pin was in the larger delivery box, tucked in the side. Unless it fell out, I may have not noticed it.

This listing is a handy opportunity to spot the flippers and start my own "Do not buy from..." list. ????????
Boraston Boraston
Yeah no kidding. Talk about a steady mark up huh?
Buriwield Buriwield
I got set number 84, how about the rest of you?
Debeme Debeme
The mission is incomplete without the image disc. Hopefully Ozma can come up with an addendum. A beautiful artifact nonetheless.

I would like to thank the person who corrected the track list. I was waiting to fix it when my copy arrived but I have not received mine yet. So thank you again!

This is still up for sale exactly like this pressing i think. http://www.ozmarecords.com/shop

There's some differences in packaging otherwise yes it's the same.
Jesmi Jesmi
This bothered me as well, I bought it for a love of history, but knowing that only enough to cover kickstarter orders were being made added to a coolness and value factor... then clearly they got dollar signs in their eyes, or worse, lied and planned this all along... now on the website you can buy everything, the special pin, slipmat and print even... ya you're gonna spend $40 more... but then you basically got the limited edition other than slight differences than no one will care about... so that original hey we're only making enough to cover you guys... is a lie, and turns us all into suckers on some level. It's just not a cool thing to do.
Hurus Hurus
I should add that I've had similar experiences with other Kickstarter campaigns. I have participated only in a handful so far, but based on those experiences, I'm inclined to no longer support any of them. There always seems to be some sort of over-promising involved. I remember one (for the Soundbrenner Metronome) where they had a countdown clock of 24 hours advertising a special rate that "would not be offered again!" Well, guess what: The 24-hour counter stayed on the website for most of the campaign, and they simply reset it every day.
funike funike
Count me among those who feel disappointed by the project initiators. Of course i didn't support the campaign because of the exclusivity factor, but reeling us in with the promise of "this not being available in stores, ever!", only to then come out with mass-produced package that is almost indistinguishable from the original is borderline bait and switch, in my opinion. I mean, come on, 140 g vs. 180g, and hardcover vs. softcover -- who the heck cares? Sorry, but unfortunately, my turntable didn't come with a built-in scale, so I can't really appreciate the difference.
Bil Bil
Although the original Kickstarter announcement of the new pressing is a little confusing regarding the actual differences between the two versions, two key differences are notable: 1) The original vinyl is 180 gram and the new vinyl is 140 gram. 2) The original book is hardcover and the new one is softcover. Beyond that, it seems any potential differences are likely small. Direct comparison will be the only way to tell for sure. The big question is whether anyone with the original box is planning to get the new version to do a comparison. No doubt someone will eventually provide us all with feedback after the mid-November release date.
Anaginn Anaginn
Jeanviper This is still up for sale exactly like this pressing i think. http://www.ozmarecords.com/shop No, that is the second pressing that will be shipping out in Mid-November. It is different than the Kickstarter first pressing. Kickstarter was limited to 10,000 copies, second pressing is (at the moment) unlimited. Kickstarter pressing is OOP.

Listening to the Voyager Box Set, 40th anniversary first release on vinyl - imagine, these were sent out into space in a gesture of our humanity, in hope and empathy to a seemingly cold and unapproachable universe we knew so little about. Mankind's ability to dream, to hope, to pursue truth and create strength out of vulnerability is our best legacy.I did feel a little upset when I heard about the second pressing, but like others stated, it's not the same, and it doesn't matter, not really. I didn't buy this to resell, I bought it because I love history, and I wanted to support and be a part of this journey.I considered selling mine at first because my fiance are moving in together in San Diego and it's very expensive with moving costs, etc... a lot has changed since I supported the campaign, and others... but without inspiration, there is only work, and that wears on you... it's important to keep that passion alive...I am looking forward to opening my box set and playing the records on my turntable. Imagining what was going through the minds of those who originally sent these out into space...I look out into the night sky almost every night, reaching out to the echos of stars... feeling the pull of the cosmos... and it's overwhelming.I am glad to share this with you all.Thank you Ozma for putting this out.

Thanks buddy. I am selling a bunch of records, things on Ebay, simplifying in many ways, if interested in the links, PM me.

Awesome to hear! Best of luck to both of you. :-)

well it occurred to me that work is going well enough that I can hold onto some of the beautiful things that inspire in my life and just work a little harder to make that money to move .
Tansino Tansino
I'm glad to see you will be enjoying your records instead of trying to flip them for $1000 like you were yesterday. It's a great set, glad Ozma put it together.
